Das Ziel der Arbeitsgruppe FIPA ist es, Forschung auf dem Gebiet der automatischen Verarbeitung von Gesichtsbildern voranzutreiben, um Systeme zu entwickeln, die Gesichter wie Menschen lesen können. Die folgenden Forschungsthemen werden von der Arbeitsgruppe abgedeckt:

FIPA wird von Dr.-Ing. Ekenel geleitet, der mehrere Jahre Erfahrung auf dem Gebiet der Gesichtsanalyse, mit Schwerpunkt auf Gesichtserkennung, hat. Er erhielt 2008 den EBF European Biometric Research Award sowie, mit seinem Team, den Best Demo Award auf der IEEE International Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition.
FIPA ist Teil des Computer Vision for Human-Computer Interaction Lab am Institut für Anthropomatik, an der Fakultät für Informatik des Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie (KIT). Die Arbeitsgruppe wird finanziell vom “Zukunftskonzept” des Karlsruher Institut für Technologie im Rahmen der deutschen Exzellenzinitiative gefördert.
